3 Days Tour from Marrakech to Chegaga Desert

DESCRIPTION

Day 1: Marrakesh to Draa Valley.

Trip from marrakech to erg chegaga. The 3-day Chigaga dunes tour begins with a pick-up from your hotel in Marrakesh at 8am for the drive into the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi-n-Tichka pass at 2260m. We leave the main road for a drive to the Kasbah at Telouat, which belonged to the Basha of Marrakesh of the Glaoui family. It now lies in glorious ruins after the last Pasha fled. From there we follow the Ounilla Valley to reach the historic Kasbahs of Ait Ben Haddou, Morocco’s most famous Kasbah and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We have lunch at a restaurant along the newly paved connecting road. We then continue south to Agdez, where the Draa Valley begins, and stay in a local kasbah for the night.

Day 2: Drive from the Draa Valley to the Erg Chegaga Dunes

After breakfast, you can explore the rest of the Kasbah before we take the old caravan road between the river and the mountains. We pass many villages and camps typical of life along the valley. We drive to M’hamid, known as the gateway to the desert, where we stop for a lunch of traditional Tagines. The last stretch to Erg Chergaga is 60km of off-road driving in the famous Sahara Desert. Once we arrive, a two-hour camel ride is scheduled into the dunes to watch the sunset. Experiencing the Erg Chergaga dunes is magical. You are far from civilization and the silence and expanse of sand are overwhelming. Dinner and overnight stays are provided in nomadic tents under a stretch of stars.

Day 3: Erg Chegaga Dunes Drive to Marrakech

Our final day begins with an off-road drive through another 90km of desert with varied landscapes including expansive mountains, Lake Iriki and a visit to an area famous for its ancient fossil beds. Here you will find extraordinary fossils from the Paleozoic Era, almost 540 million years ago, when Morocco was an ancient sea. Lunch will be in Foum Zguid, the first village after the desert, where you can also cool off with a bath. The return to Marrakech is via a comfortable paved road passing through the village of Taznakht, famous for its Berber carpets. Many tourists take advantage of this and find a perfect rug for their home.
